How To Turn Off Ads On Gmail

Google has rolled out a design of the Gmail interface that separates mail through different tabs, such as Primary, Social, Promotions, Updates and Forums. Mainly an effort to increase revenue from its hugely popular service.

These ads are tricky because they are mixed in with your inbox and look like a regular email. Luckily, there is a simple way to get rid of the new ads.

We're used seeing Internet ads everywhere we go, but having them inside of our inbox can be quite annoying. Gmail ads look a bit too much like legitimate emails, which is problematic for many users. However, they're also limited to the Promotions tab, which makes it super easy to turn them off if you want to avoid confusion.

Although ads can be temporarily hidden by tapping the X next to them but this won’t stop them for reappearing the next time users log on. The only way to permanently prevent ads from showing up in inbox is by removing the Promotions tab.
  • Click the Settings (gear shaped icon) in the top right corner of the Gmail tab.
  • Select "Configure Inbox."
  • Deselect the "Promotions" tab and click Save.

You can also disable the tabs entirely by unchecking everything except "Primary" on this same menu, if you prefer. This, for the time being at least will keep your Gmail inbox ad-free.
